Abstract

This developmental research investigates the creation and evaluation of digital storytelling media designed to enhance Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) instruction in Madrid language institutes. As digital technologies increasingly mediate language learning, innovative pedagogical tools leveraging narrative engagement, multimedia affordances, and interactive features offer promising approaches for developing communicative competence and cultural awareness. Employing Design-Based Research methodology, this study developed a comprehensive digital storytelling platform incorporating authentic Madrid-based narratives, interactive linguistic scaffolds, cultural contextualization, and multimodal learning resources across proficiency levels A1-B2 (CEFR framework). Development involved iterative cycles with participation from 18 language instructors, 6 educational technology specialists, 4 Hispanic culture experts, and pilot implementation with 165 SFL learners from diverse linguistic backgrounds at three Madrid language schools. Evaluation through mixed-methods assessment revealed high usability ratings, significant improvements in narrative comprehension and production, enhanced cultural knowledge, and increased learner motivation and engagement compared to conventional textbook approaches. Learners particularly valued authentic cultural content, personalized learning pathways, immediate feedback mechanisms, and opportunities for creative expression through student-generated digital stories. Findings demonstrate digital storytelling's effectiveness for contextualized, culturally rich, engaging SFL instruction while identifying implementation considerations including technological literacy requirements, instructional design complexity, and balancing structure with creative autonomy.
